It is about so much more than merely filling a gap. The Urbane Mitte wishes to become a vibrant and diverse quarter, an urban space for everybody.

The Urbane Mitte fills one of the Berlin’s last big gaps in the centre of the city. It links the Mitte, Schöneberg and Kreuzberg districts and forms a connecting bridge between the Park am Greisdreieck and the surrounding city.

In doing so, the quarter combines old and new. A new part of the city is emerging from the fusion of listed train station and modern, forward-looking architecture. Its aim is to forge new links, bring people together and initiate new ideas.

HOW DO WE WISH TO LIVE AND WORK IN FUTURE?

A city quarter tackles tomorrow’s tasks today.

The Urbane Mitte is focusing on five areas and getting to grips with the challenges associated with each of them in the development stage:

COLLABORATION

Participation and co-creation. The Urbane Mitte embraces the collaborative idea in creating its living and working spaces.

MOBILITY

Public transport and pioneering mobility concepts will be harmoniously integrated into a car-free and pedestrian- and bike-friendly quarter.

NEIGHBOURHOOD

It is more than just a place of work. The Urbane Mitte wishes to be a platform for the city that opens itself up and connects with its surroundings.

CULTURE

Art and culture are key elements of the quarter’s DNA as a form of enrichment, as meeting places and as a source of inspiration.

A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY

A company’s business activities are deemed successful when they have a positive influence and are socially and environmentally responsible.

 

ARRIVAL IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The Urbane Mitte is a symbol of car-free, mobile living in the capital.

The Gleisdreieck U-Bahn station is a mobile hub in the centre of Berlin. The large cycle and pedestrian axes in the Park am Gleisdreieck have linked the Kreuzberg, Schöneberg and Mitte districts – which had been separated for decades by brownfield sites – and created a connected location in the heart of Berlin. The Urbane Mitte picks up on these qualities and enhances them with additional offerings.

In future, people will no longer only want to change trains here. They will alight to spend some time in the area.

The aim is to make it possible for everyone who lives and works here to get around without a car:

  • U-Bahn lines U1 and U2
  • S-Bahn line S21 being planned
  • Direct connection to the Leipzig–Berlin long-distance cycle path
  • 500 bike parking spaces
  • Option for car and bike sharing stations
  • E-charging stations / hydrogen filling stations
  • All underground car parks equipped with e-charging stations

GROWING TOGETHER

The Urbane Mitte connects. Private retreats with public spaces. Contemplative moments with lively socialising. Art and culture with daily needs.

By day, it is a place of work; by night it is ‘a place to be’. Sport early in the morning, shopping in the afternoon, beer garden in the evening. Urban gardening next to the office, lunch in the park, in the balcony gardens or on the roof terrace. The flow of people and ideas from the surroundings converge here, create a real vibrancy and initiate development. Digital connections and real-life encounters take place simultaneously. Users can find niches and places of inspiration outside their places of work. Visitors, tenants, neighbours and interested parties intermingle in a vibrant and diverse setting.

DOING GOOD FOR THE BENEFIT OF EVERBODY

The quality of a place is determined by the diversity of what it has to offer, its openness to the idea of different usage concepts and its regard for the surroundings and people who live and work there.

The Urbane Mitte is concerned with ensuring this quality exists. Among other things, there are plans to set up a neighbourhood fund financed by tenants with the aim of financing usage concepts worthy of subsidy. In the first step, an idea is being considered to make available spaces covering a total of 2,000 square metres to local and regional tenants at reduced rental rates. Social programmes and social infrastructure – including a language school, training opportunities and sports facilities – are designed to get everyone actively involved in the quarter.
